2016 Sunraysia Multicultural Festival
On 30th April 2016 over 1500 people turned up at the SMECC Community Cultural Centre facility for a great (and surprisingly warm) day of food, music, craft, culture and fun.
Big thanks first and foremost is to those from our different ethnic communities for leading a range of activities at this years event. Obviously without them volunteering lots of time to plan in the lead up to the event, it all just wouldn't be possible.
Special thanks to our volunteers on the day, Playalong Early Childhood services for running the children's activities, Youth Service Mildura for helping with survey data collection, ABC Mildura-Swan Hill for their media and MC support, and Sunrayisa Daily for lots of great media support to promote the event.
Not sure what the plans hold for 2017 yet, but if you are a member of a local ethnic community group and already have some ideas for how your and a group of friends could get involved for next years event please contact us now (as we've already started planning)
Also big thanks to our sponsors: Viatak, Best for Less Furniture, festival funding partner the Mildura Rural City Council, and community project partner the Victoria State Government.
Check out our feedback
Thanks to the many people who also gave us feedback for the event. With the vast majority being positive. Over 92% of the respondents rated the festival as 'excellent' or 'very good'. And we were pleasantly surprised to see a number of new people at this years event, with 58% of respondents saying they were at the event for the first time. Also below is a selection of feedback quotes from those on the day which was great to see.
“(I was there to) Support the beautiful cultures that we have in our community. To show and teach my 2.5 yr old girl different nationalities have different ways, wear different clothes, are different in skin colour, dance differently and have different s. But most important we respect and be kind to each other no matter what culture we come from. We learn from these beautiful people.”
It was incredible! So many varieties and it was simply delicious. I wish you ran a SMECC takeaway shop or traveling takeaway van. Dumplings were incredible and chicken curry were our favourites :-)
All of it (was our favourite part). From when we walked in the beautiful flags, the different stalls. The omg in heaven, and kids entrainment and the stage entrainment. Congratulations on an outstanding event/festival. U covered it very well. Job well done.
