2014 Sunraysia Multicultural Festival
SMECC led the inaugural Sunraysia Multicultural Festival on April 12th 2014 at Nowingi Place.
The main objective of the 2014 inaugural festival was to showcase the cultural and ethnic diversity of our region, through a vibrant event which encouraged the participation and engagement of the whole community.
Eighteen Nationalities were represented, proudly celebrating our region’s cultural and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities through food, art, craft, sport, dance, song and music. It was a great success with over 1200 people of all ages and backgrounds attending this wonderful event.
However, this venture wasn’t only about working towards a special one day event. A tremendously important part of this project involved generating long term benefits for our CALD communities. This included building their confidence, skills and knowledge through the establishment and running of a festival steering committee, attending accredited training programs (first aid, event management, food safety), and building relationships within and between our CALD communities, between CALD communities and local businesses, organisations and the general public.
Such accomplishments cannot happen without the vision and support of key funding bodies and sponsors. I would especially like to acknowledge the Victorian Government Unity Through Partnerships Grants Program, Mildura Rural City Council, who have continued to provide grants and partner our festival into 2015.
Thank you also to our media partner, ABC Mildura-Swan Hill, and our sponsors: Sunraysia Musicians Club; First National Real Estate Collie & Tierney; Sunraysia Rugby League and Lower Murray Water.
